Insider InformationI have inside information gathered from observing the subject since 1995. Readers of this article will be privy to the information before those who do not read it and may use it as they see fit. This admission worries me greatly because I have just read about a postal worker who traded on information he learned from Business Week magazine before the weekly was available to the public and here I am giving out information (1). An individual who worked in the Mount Vernon, New York postal facility was charged with conspiracy and securities fraud. He has been accused of garnering more than $150,000 in “illegal profits” by obtaining the names of companies discussed in Business Week’s “Inside Wall Street” column. The individual has also been accused of sharing information with a friend who allegedly paid $10,000 for the information. Well folks, I am going to share information with you about the subject I have observed since 1995. Mariano Rivera is fine. Despite some recent performances that indicate Mariano is human, he has lost nothing. The fast ball is still fast, the cutter still cuts, and the bats still shatter. And an occasional ground ball still gets through the infield. Mariano relieved Sterling Hitchcock in the ninth inning against Kansas City this past Wednesday, gave up four ground balls that went for hits, one of which Yankees announcer Bobby Murcer thought was going to be a double play, and then, with the game on the line, became Mariano Rivera against Desi Relaford, who had absolutely no chance of hitting the ball. Relaford struck out and that was the game. I have watched relief pitchers from Allie Reynolds (yes, Stengel often used Reynolds in relief when he had to win a game) to Bob Grim to Ryne Duren to Luis Arroyo to Sparky Lyle to Rich Gossage to Dave Righetti. They are not successful all the time. They lose games, sometimes a few in a row. One night in Kansas City, Arroyo gave up a game winning home run to Andy Carey. The next night, Carey again was up as the winning run. This time Arroyo struck him out. After the game, Arroyo explained that it was a challenge and that he had to find out who was the better man. Mariano is supposed to be the best of them all. Maybe it is because he was so important to the most recent Yankees’ World Championship teams. When the others pitched, they were not closers. They were relief pitchers who came in to pitch when the game was on the line.
