When Does Fiction Go too Far?Using company names in works is another matter. If you are badgering the company in any way, you should consider changing the name. I had to do that for a story I wrote loosely based on a McDonald's where I lived. However, if you are just placing your characters within the company's establishment, or loosely using the name in praise or reference, the company should consider it free advertising. The question is still out on references to previously copyrighted pop culture materials. How far should we go? I feel that it is so much a part of our lifestyles, it would be hard to keep fiction relevant without referring to these things. What do you think?
