Software for Writers

One of the most common questions I am asked is whether there is any software that would help with the comic writing process. The unfortunate truth is that there is only one product that I am aware of for comic writers is a freeware Microsoft Word (95/97) template created by Steve Greber. http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages... As an aid, some people might find this template handy, once you get used to working with it. However, I can't guarantee that it will work with newer versions of Word, nor will they work with other word processors. Other than this product the only comic book products you are likely to find are those helping you organize your comic collection. Though what are available are various general writing programs that you can adapt to your writing needs.

One of the most helpful tools is a submission-tracking program and the best that I have come across is Write Again! http://www.asmoday.com/WA.htm Not only is this software affordable, it is quite powerful. This is a very professional package that allows you to not only keep track of submissions, but markets, specific projects, as well as your writing costs and includes a powerful reporting functionality. This product is well worth looking at.

Another useful tool is a program to collect and organize your writing ideas. Idea Tracker is such a program. http://www.intellectusenterprises.com/Id... While intended for organizing ideas, this program is customizable enough to also organize a variety of your notes and other written documents, such as poetry, writing markets, minute meetings and even recipes. It is quite a powerful little program once you learn how customize it for your needs.

One final utility that I have come across and found sort of handy is Wurdz. http://adwt.com/pc/wurdz.htm This is a simple text analyzer, which tells you how many times you have used certain words. This is helpful in learning faults with your own writing through the over use of certain words. Unfortunately, this only works for text files.

While there are other software tools specifically for writers, unfortunately many of them are either vastly out of date or specifically for writing forms not easily convertible to comic book script writing. Software programs for screen scriptwriting are an excellent example of this. While the two forms are similar, the actual formats are too differing to be entirely useful. Also, such programs tend to be very costly. Feel free to let me know of any other writing software programs that you think are helpful.
