Welcome to Writing Comic Books/Strips

Welcome to Writing for Comic Books/Strips your guide to everything related to writing for comic books/strips, (which hereafter will simply be referred to as comics). Whether you are a beginner starting out or a seasoned professional, and regardless of whether you are interested in writing the types of comics you grew up on or trying to stretch the medium to new grounds this place is for you.

Comic writing is a very special form of writing that takes the best of script writing (plays, movies, and TV), and mixes it with written fiction (novels and short stories). You are able to use the visual medium of script writing, without needing tons of people to bring your story to life and you are able to mix it with the depth and words of written fiction, without having to spend pages describing a scene. This isn’t to say that the form does not have disadvantages. The biggest disadvantage being that unless you are fortunate enough to draw you have to work with at least one partner to see your creations come to life, but I will discuss this in a future article. With the ability to take the best of both worlds you are able to tell virtually any story. Most comic professionals, when asked, will tell you not to write comics. They will tell you that except in rare cases you cannot make a living from your writing, and it is not worth the trouble. And unfortunately making money at comics is extremely difficult. That doesn’t mean it isn’t possible, but it does mean that it is going to take a lot of work and most of us will never make a living solely off comic writing. This, however, should not be a reason not to start at all. Markets changes and new opportunities, such as the Internet, can be explored. Writing comics should be fun, and your reason to write them should be, first and foremost, for the love of it. Money will come but you have to enjoy what you are doing while you try and get there. Whether writing comics will only ever be a hobby or if it is part of your career for you, enjoy what you are doing.

Over the next few weeks you will be able to read the simple basics of how to write comics and sell your stories. Once I get the basics out of the way, I move on to discussions of the various aspects of comic creation and new opportunities that exist out there for comic writers. I hope these will stimulate lively discussions. The one great thing about writing comics is the possibilities of the medium are endless.
