Write a Bestseller— By Having fun!

Finally, don't take yourself too seriously, no matter how serious your topic. Robert J. Sawyer was once told by a disappointed fan that his book, HOMINIDS, was crap. Sawyer responded by telling him to F . . . well you get the gist. Now that is taking yourself way too seriously. Of course, you know you've made it when one of your books has that big of an impact that someone is willing to get up at the crack of dawn to be first in line to tell you your book sucks!

Try to find the humour in your writing and in the idea of even being a writer. In FONDLING YOUR MUSE, John Warner says, "Desperation is the mother of invention, and if you think you have a future as a writer, you're nothing if not desperate." A psychologist in-law of mine once said to me, when he learned that I was writing my first novel THE RAVEN'S POOL, "Isn't writing fiction like taking off all of your clothes in front of everyone and having them point and laugh?" Well, yes, it is rather like that, isn't it? And yet hundreds, no, thousands of people want to do it. Rather a strange species aren't we?
