How to Write a Bestseller: A Review of Some Writing Books for Experienced Authors

My next recommendation is a book for screen writers with much to offer the novelist. Robert McKee's STORY: SUBSTANCE, STRUCTURE, STYLE, AND THE PRINCIPLES OF SCREENWRITING, is a must for authors wanting to understand the principles behind advanced storytelling. This book is for writers who understand the basics of fiction writing and the dynamics of effective storytelling, but can't quite put the concepts into their own writing. The book is about form, not formula. McKee reaches beyond rigid rules to identify the components that distinguish quality stories. He spotlights the importance of theme, setting and atmosphere, and highlights the need for character versus characterization.
