Are Pirate Novels the Next Bestselling Trend?Does that mean if you want to write a bestselling pirate novel you can't have a woman as a powerful protagonist? Absolutely not. You don't have to regress to the "damsel in distress" heroines of the Eroll Flynn movies. But to make yourself marketable and to reflect social trends, consider the negatives if you make her captain. Think about who your target audience is. Traditionally pirate novels were written for men. Stevenson's TREASURE ISLAND, Sabatini's CAPTAIN BLOOD. These stories depict strong male heroes, at home in their element. But the draw of the sea is not restricted to men. Women work at sea or at jobs that take them travelling worldwide. This idea of freedom and lawlessness draws men and women alike to pirate fiction. A new wave of pirate fiction is on the horizon. As Johnny Depp reprises his role in the next installment of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, a hundred would-be writers are frantically tapping away at their keyboards in hopes of riding the wave. But a trend is only as big as its characters and you have to hit the right moment at the right time with the right story.
