Writer's Website a Great New Site

Jun 19, 1998 - © Roxianne Moore

Writers' Website holds much more than appears on the surface. The home page provides a link list and, tucked away, a little pop-up menu of choices. Scroll through the choices, and you'll find interviews with authors, agents and publishers. I really enjoyed the interview with Xena-writer R. J. Stewart.

The link list currently has 85 links to some great sites. Since it's neatly categorized, you'll have no trouble finding just the sites you want. Under Writing, for instance, the links are further broken down by genre and type. I found nine links under Resources, most of which were worth a visit.

One link, from the Articles list (consisting of two articles), was a bit difficult to find. The link is entitled "The Mall from Hell," but it led to The Romance Reader. After some searching, I found the article under Road Stories, number 11. More on this later.

Another great site linked here is Publisher's Catalogues Home Page. You can choose any geographic location, and get links to university, subsidy and mainstream publishers. While it would take years to page through all of them, this would be especially handy if you wanted to know what titles a particular publisher is carrying. There must be thousands of publishers here, listed alphabetically. Through Bookserve.com., you also get lists of titles from many of the larger publishers.

Since Writer's Website is fairly new, many of the categories are still empty. If you have sites to recommend, or if you want to trade links, there's plenty of room for expansion here.

Although this topic is devoted to the "how-tos" and "where to looks" of writing, I often find other sites that capture my attention. The Romance Reader turned out to be such an interesting site, I returned to it after browsing through Writer's Website. In addition to the 12 Road Stories, which give a glimpse into the real life of published authors, I found "how we met" stories from Romance authors, and an amusing poem "Ode to a Hero Named Joe." You can add your own talents to this last item, and some of the offerings are hilarious.

Another good page is recommendations of non-romance books. The recommendations range from mysteries to drama to science fiction and fantasy. I haven't read Sharyn McCrumb's latest, The Ballad of Frankie Silver, but after reading the review here, I'm eager to get to the bookstore (or order it online). If you're looking for a good book to curl up with this summer, these mini-reviews are a good place to start your search.
