Writer's Village Moves to New Location

This week I want to update you on an excellent site I've featured in this column. Writer's Village, a meeting place for writers in all fields, has moved to 4-Writers.com/T-zero Writer's Complex site. While the move didn't just happen last week, this is the first chance I've had to go through the whole site. I was impressed by the changes, and believe that once everything is up and running, this will be a premier site for writers.

If you haven't visited Writer's Village before, it's worth a look. You'll find a rather biased and quirky list of authors, including Isabel Allende, Julian Barnes, John Barth, Donald Barthelme, Italo Calvino, Umberto Eco, Aldous Huxley and Salman Rushdie. Poetry, fiction and essays also appear to be tied to this list.

The forum is apparently unavailable. When I tried to access it, I got a rather terse - and ungrammatical - message: "Either you requested a page that doesn't exist, or very possibly, your (sic) trying to access an account that has been closed because (sic) no payment was received and the account was closed."

You'll find an impressive collection of references, making this a good starting place for online research. With a search utility, it becomes even more useful. Among the references you can access:

  • Library of Congress
  • 11 Rules of Writing
  • Elements of Style
  • The UVic Writer's Guide
  • On-Line Dictionaries
  • The Playwriting Seminars
  • The Etymology of First Names
  • The On-line Books Page
  • Newspapers From Around The World
  • DisInformation (Radical thinking at its finest!)
  • Alciato's Book of Emblems
  • Television News Archive
  • Encyclopedia Mythica
  • Perpetual Calendar
  • College and University

. . . plus a lot more sites, many of which can be accessed elsewhere.

In addition to these features, you'll also find "General," "Essential," and "Writer's links." The General list is immense, with lists of newspapers, books, magazines and search engines, as well as more specific categories such as science, literary and philosophy. Don't let this scare you off, though. The page is very well organized in table format, and is easy to navigate.

The rest of the 4-Writers.com site is just as impressive. From the front page, the Forum function is available. This functions as a message board for general and special-interest topics. You'll also find Fiction 401 and Fiction 98 here, two free six-week courses.

Cyberhouse 7+ also has a presence here, although this international writer's group isn't accessible yet. The page simply says it's the "future home" of the group, so I'll keep checking on it to see when it's up and operational.

I took one of their classes, but decided it wasn't for me. Right now I'm taking a class through Writers on the Net and enjoying it. Once that's done, I might have to try another Writers Village course ...

I've used Writer's Village before, but I like their new location better. Sort of like when your favorite book shop moves to a shopping center with lots of other great shops.
