Book Review

If you watch this page mostly for tips on good web sites for writers, I've got a good book for you. Writer's Internet Sourcebook by Michael Levin lists and reviews more than 500 sites for writers in all fields.

One of the problems with Internet guides is that by the time the book gets into the stores, half the addresses are obsolete and still others aren't being updated any longer. That's not the case with this one. Most of the sites I checked were still in existence and up-to-date.

The suggestion in the book's intro to go back to a page's root directory or top level is an excellent one. For instance, if you try http://www.writers.net/agents.html, and get a message that "the page you requested cannot be located on this site," try http://www.writers.net/ and click on "Literary Agents" before you give up on the site. (Please note that if you click on the italicized words, you won't go anywhere.) Since Writers' Net has other great pages, you might want to try this anyway to get a look at the whole site.

Various and Sundry Topics

No matter what your specialty, you'll find some excellent resources here. Topics include:

  1. Authors, Agents, and Publishers
    • Authors and Author Directories
    • Professional Organizations
    • Publishing Houses
  2. The Business of Writing
    • Book Fairs
    • Employment for Writers
    • Promotion and Marketing
    • Review Sources
  3. Genre by Genre
    • Young Adult, Middle Grade, and Children's Writing
    • Journalism Resources
    • Mystery Writing
  4. Ways to Improve Your Writing
    • Classes Online
    • Copy Editing Sites
    • Grammar and Usage Guides
  5. Getting Published Online
    • Publishing Your Work Online
    • Black and Hispanic Sites
    • Books Online
    • Librarians' Resources
    • Research Powerhouses

But that's just the surface. Dig a little deeper into these general topics, and you'll find all sorts of gems. Each section begins with a brief introduction and advice pertaining to the topic.

Agents, Promotion and More

For instance, under Agents, you'll be advised to find a copy of Literary Marketplace and attend writers' conferences to find an agent. As for web sites, you'll find only four in this section, but they're all good sites. I especially liked The Internet Directory of Literary Agents, which is a searchable database that seems quite extensive.

Under "Promotion and Marketing," you'll find advice on how to market your book and list your web page. You'll also find reviews of commercial and quirky personal sites. Although I had to try a couple times to load all the buttons on Booktalk, it was worth the effort. You'll find links to publishing houses, as well as current events in publishing. You'll also find authors, along with odd little tidbits they use to market themselves and their books. For instance, Susan Elizabeth Phillips has created vegetarian recipes named after her characters.
