Touring the Web on Crutches

By rights, I ought to be writing up a storm. Yet here I am, finishing my biweekly article a week late. This time (unlike most other times I'm late), I have a good excuse. You see, I broke my leg a couple weeks ago.

If you've never done anything like this, believe me, it makes a big difference in your life. For one thing, I can't drive. Talk about a major lifestyle change. One of the worst aspects, though, is having to listen to well-meant advice from friends and family. I've lost count of how many times I've heard, "Well, at least you'll be able to get some writing done."

Apart from the fact that the medication I was on made it very hard to concentrate, I had a lot of other things on my mind. Like how to get my five-year-old to preschool, how to manage meals when I couldn't stand, even how to get myself a cup of coffee without burning myself. Once I finally got that taken care of (by having my younger brother come and stay with me — another major lifestyle change), I still had to figure out how to get me and my cast to the computer desk. I've got that worked out now, and I'm out of excuses.

I must admit, it's been a real adjustment. First of all, just having to depend on someone else to do things for me — that definitely doesn't come naturally. Living with my brother has been another adjustment. Since he's fourteen years younger, I haven't lived with him since he was my son's age. I realized that I don't know him very well at all.

On the other hand, since he's here watching my son, and I can't get out to do anything else, I can explore the 'Net to my heart's content. I did some link-hopping, starting with Poets & Writers Online. Since I've never done anything on supplies and software, I decided to start there. I began with P&W's Great Resources page, and clicked on the appropriate button. This let me to Write Time Write Trak. This pair of programs looks like it would take the headaches out of making and tracking submissions. Their samples (a little slow to load) suggest that they have an extensive database of markets. Combined with the tracking software, this could be a powerful tool for writers. Ordering and information are via e-mail, and there were no online demos. Still, it's worth a second look.

What a pathetic avoidance of the announced subject of the article. Break your other leg. Perhaps then we will get closer to something useful to writers. How about reviews of Bird by Bi ...
