MAKE MONEY WRITING FOR ONLINE MARKETS

Review of How to Make Money Writing on the Web" by Barbara Price Galvan

This little 46-page e-book is a brief guide to get you started writing for online markets. Most of the information is at a very basic level, and some of it is unclear. The chapter on creating a web site to generate extra income is difficult to follow.

But there are some good ideas here. I would like to see more on how to evaluate ads for freelance writers. So many of these ads lead you to a site that asks YOU to pay THEM to publish your work. That's no way to make money. Yet Galvan offers no guidelines for figuring out which markets are legitimate, and which are simply vanity publishers or sites looking for free content.

The first section, an in-depth guide to conducting a Internet search, is probably the most valuable part of the book. Galvan considers Usenet and other discussion groups, then launches into a very detailed primer on using subject guides and search engines.

Later in the same section, she lists 71 ways writers can make money, followed by 33 suggested market areas for writing on the Internet. These are not specific markets, but general fields. Following these two lists, Galvan suggests several search phrases for finding specific jobs and markets.

After this solid beginning, the book dissolves into generalizations, offering an overview rather than an in-depth guide. I think this book is a good start, but it needs to have more depth to be of value to any but the novice.

If you'd like to get your feet wet in the vast ocean of web-writing opportunities, How to Make Money Writing on the Web is available from Booklocker.com for $8.95.
