Fiction Resources

A Library at Your Fingertips

First off, the emphasis of this topic will be changing a little. Because Suite 101 will soon have a section devoted to freelancers and nonfiction, I've decided to focus on creative writing. I'll include articles of interest to writers of fiction and poetry. I haven't planned out my next month's articles based on the changed focus, so if anyone has suggestions, let me know.

Second, I know I've covered research before, but some of these sights are so good, I just had to get the word out. Many of these come from a recent circular from @writers. To subscribe to the free @WRITERS newsletter, send 'subscribe a-writers' message to . You'll get frequent circulars (I think they're supposed to be weekly, but I sometimes get more than one a week) with lots of news for writers. This is a newsletter in the old style, with input from a variety of people, and it's all timely. Another good newsletter is Inklings.

And now the recommended fiction research sites:

My Virtual Reference Desk — This is one-stop research at its best. You'll have to take your time with this one, and if you're an information junkie like me, you'll come back again and again just to browse.

Writer's Toolbox — Now has a Java-based chat room, as well as up-to-date links and lots of good info. I know this is one my links list, but I think it's worth a second mention.

Internet Public Library — While this isn't exactly a substitute for a good local library, it's still a good place to start your research. You'll find information on almost any topic here, though you may miss the smell of ink and paper.

Fantasy Writers Resources — Even if you don't write fantasy, you might want to take a look at this site. You'll find some good resources, and lots of fun stuff.

And last, although this isn't a research site, it's worth a plug.Writers' Village offers writing classes. Fiction 401 is a free fiction course, and it looks good. I've taken one of their free courses, and it was worthwhile.
