Two Sites Focus on Unusual Freelance Opportunities

Back in March, I reviewed two books by Marcia Yudkin, Writing Articles About The World Around You, and 6 Steps to Free Publicity. I also mentioned her Freelance FAQ, which has loads of helpful material. Now I'd like to update that information.

Marcia Yudkin's Site a Goldmine

Yudkin has her own page devoted to freelance writing. Published! How to Reach Writing Success will guide you through Yudkin's unique approach to freelancing, showing you how to use entrepreneurial skills to boost your income. Topics include:

  • The Freelance Writing FAQ
  • Preparing Your Book Proposal/Manuscript for Submission
  • Career Strategies of $30,000+ Writers
  • Frustrated with Magazine Writing? Go Entrepreneurial!
  • How Writers Can Cash in as Experts
  • The Editor/Writer Revolving Door
  • Schmoozing Online with Editors
  • Getting Around to the "Good Stuff"
  • The Publicity FAQ
  • Finding Hidden Markets
  • Why a Writers' Conference? And Which One?
  • Publishing on Demand Changes the Equation of Self-Publishing
  • You Too Can Sniff Out Scams!

In "Finding the Hidden Markets," learn how to go beyond Writer's Market to find off-beat magazines and non-magazine markets for your work. One example I particularly liked highlighted a little-known outlet: team programs.

New York City writer Jim Morrison found a market when he received a call from the editor of the program for the Seattle Mariners, asking to reprint a piece he wrote for Southwest Spirit on the making of a Louisville Slugger bat. "I got off the phone and, boing, I realized there were 29 other teams, all with programs."

Using nonoverlapping markets like this, you could easily re-sell your work many times, boosting your income and your published clips.

Herman Holtz Uses a Different Freelance Approach

Herman Holtz has another great site for freelancers.[Editor's note: As of Oct. 1, 1999, this link doesn't seem to be working, but I haven't found the problem. Keep trying it, and I'll replace it if necessary and possible.] His emphasis is very different from Yudkin's, in that he focuses on copywriting. He'll lead you step by step through the process of writing convincing material for businesses. His current newsletter discusses the importance of good leads, an excerpt from his e-book Freelance Writer or Writer-Consultant? If you have considered a career as a copywriter, or if you're hoping copywriting can supplement your magazine writing income, Holtz may convince you to change your plans.

Some topics include:

  • Writing Sell Copy
  • Proof & Promise
  • Creating a USP
  • Books on a Disk
