A Place for Writers

© Roxianne Moore

For the past few weeks, I've looked at alternative markets and ways to generate more writing income. I've discussed greeting cards and newspaper columns, as well as a book with loads of fresh market ideas. This week, I'll continue my series of income-generators with a great Website: A Writer's Place.

This site isn't huge. You won't find page after page of articles or a huge database. What you will find find is more than 600 markets, with a versatile search engine that even lets you choose payment levels. And all of these markets pay.

Their newsletter, Writing for DOLLARS! is just one of the paying markets listed. Delivered free to your mailbox, you'll get tips on finding new markets, global markets, interviews, and new ways to make money with your writing. Better yet, if you have ideas you'd like to share, you may be paid $15 for your 500-word article.

The newsletter itself is brief, but packed with information on making money as a writer. This week's issue features breaking into the Australian market, reasons for becoming a stringer for a small newspaper, and a few paying markets. The markets are usually tied to the articles, so you'll learn how to break into a new field, then find new markets in that field.

Other features of the Website include:

  • The Chicken Writer, a daily cartoon taking a humorous look at the writing life
  • The Bookstore, discount prices on books for writers
  • The Magazine Rack, where you'll find more than 500 mags at a discount
  • Tips, moneymaking ideas for writers

So, if you're looking for easy markets, what sells the best? According to A Writer's Place, you're best bets are nonfiction books or article (except religion and education), followed by Confession stories and Genre novels. The best subjects: Family and Home, Children, Health, Medicine and Disease.

If you can come up with a fresh approach to any of these topics, or if you're a trend-watcher who knows what will be hot in a few months, start preparing those queries. For the rest of us, a little research and a little soul-searching to discover our interests and talents will help us land sales in these markets.

If you'd like to subscribe to the free newsletter, Writing for Dollars, go straight to the subscription page. Browse back issues if you want to see just how much information is loaded into this small, weekly package.

So, until next time, find some new markets, and keep writing!
