Two New Topics Show Aspiring Writers the Many Worlds of Writing
Suite 101 is continually evolving. We get new contributors every week, and I'm always amazed at the rich variety of topics offered. I'd like to introduce two of the newest contributors to Books and Publishing. Fantasy Worlds by Debbie Ledesma is one of the newest additions to Books and Publishing on Suite 101. So far, Ledesma has asked the question, "Why Read Fantasy?" Maybe she doesn't have all the answers, but she certainly seems to understand the questions fantasy readers and writers face. She has also done a nice review of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. The current article for this topic is "Types of Fantasy." As a long-time fantasy reader, I've read books in most of these sub-genres, but I never really sat down and tried to quantify the genre as a whole. Ledesma does a nice job of breaking this huge genre down into manageable and understandable bites:
Another newcomer to Suite 101 is Sherry Vaughn with Writer Interviews. Vaughn has interviewed several writers already, giving us an exciting and informative glimpse into the habits of effective, published writers. So far, she's asked the pros about query letters, genre crossing, finding time for wiritng, and the writer's ego. All of her pieces are long and packed with good advice, insight into the writing life, and a glimpse into the minds of writers. Right now, Vaughn is also running a poll to find out what types of questions you'd like to have answered by professional writers. Now is the time to place your vote and let Vaughn know what you'd like to see in the coming months. She's also promoting a contest. "The Hook in the Book," for unpublished romance writers. First prize is a "professional critique of your manuscript by a published author, a priority reading of the completed manuscript by the editor of Power of Love Publishing House and a free online writing course at Painted Rock." This is a Romance Writers of America contest. Deadline is Feb. 14, 1999, and the entry fee is $10. Winners will be announced on Vaughn's page and in the RWA American/ Australian Chapter web site and newsletter in June. You get only one paragraph to show the editors what you can do. Talk about needing to write tight! Speaking of contests, I'll be posting the winner of my essay contest in a couple of weeks. I'll also announce the next contest, so sharpen those keyboarding skills and get ready. Go To Page: 1 2
