A Look at Suite 101's Censorship/ Banned Books topic

Last time, I took a look at one of the newest additions to Books and Writing. This time, I'd like to guide you through one of the oldest topics in our group: Censorship/ Banned Books .

Rick Russell presents one of the most controversial topics on Suite 101.com, and does it with style. In fact, given all the attention censorship has been given lately - especially as regards the Internet - I believe Russell covers one of the most important issues on our system. Since September 1997, he has discussed banned books, pornography, terrorism, book-burning, and more:

We're not talking x-rated sites here. Russell examines great literature and art, and makes the point that we must all use common sense in choosing our reading material, whether we read online or in the library. And we have to set our own guidelines - and supervise our children.

This isn't standard classroom treatment of Censorship. Russell knows his subject well, and certainly does his research, but he's not hesitant about voicing his opinion. In fact, without his opinion, the topic would fall flat. Don't get me wrong. He doesn't rant and rave (well, not often). He presents his subject matter in an informed manner, but tells readers exactly how he feels about censorship in general and each subject in particular. Browsing through past columns, you'll see his eclectic tastes, his broad point of view, and his almost fanatical belief in freedom of speech (and literature).

Next time, I'll take a look at Classic Literature. In the meantime, read some of Rick Russell's articles, visit some of the sites he suggests, and check out some banned books. You may be pleasantly surprised. And I'm almost certain you'll be shocked and bewildered by the titles you find on the banned book lists.

Till next time, keep writing!
