New Publication Showcases Markets, Jobs and Contests

Continuing in the vein of reviewing less prominent or newer publications, I'd like to take a look at Inscriptions, a weekly e-mail newsletter for professional writers.

Inscriptions debuted a little more than a month ago, offering tips, tricks and trivia. Market news and job opportunities make up the bulk of the newsletter, with everything from horror mags to web site editors. Editor Pamela Wilfinger does a great job of bringing together diverse elements in a timely newsletter that meets the needs of freelancers for fresh markets and opportunities.

The feature article, "How To Write Like an Expert" by Moira Allen, addresses one of the doubts plaguing many freelancers, beginner and experienced alike. She discusses how soliciting expert opinions can bolster your personal experiences and make sales to special interest magazines more likely.

Opportunities and Markets

This week's issue (Friday, Oct. 2) also lists the following freelance opportunities:

  • Freelance Copywriter
  • Website Editor
  • Freelance Biomedical Copy Editor
  • Senior Copywriter/ Editor
  • Freelance Golf Writers
  • Fitness and Bodybuilding Writers

Markets include:

  • Across the Board: The Conference Board Magazine
  • Sisters in Crime/ LA is looking for short stories for an anthology
  • Out of the Shadows and Into the Night, a new horror anthology
  • alpahDRIVE - science fiction
  • Sapphire Magazine - fiction, nonfiction, poetry, opinion

They also list contest deadlines, although most don't give much advance notice. If you have something that might fit the criteria, though, you should have enough time to get your submission together.

An unusual feature is the Bargain Basement Book Sale. I didn't find anything that interested me, but maybe you'll find a title you've been looking for. At $1 to $3 each, they're a steal.

They also have a new website. Here, you'll be able to review last week's markets and opportunities, although the database isn't searchable. Maybe in the future.

Inscriptions has also started a monthly writing contest. This month's theme is Ghosts. They're looking for rhyming poetry of any length or form. Deadline is October 24, and first prize is a $25 gift certificate for Amazon.com.

If you're interested in subscribing, send an e-mail to MaidenFate@aol.com with "SUBSCRIBE - YOUR E- MAIL ADDRESS" in the message area.
