Last Monday on "Raw" Shane said someone was going to go jump ship from the WWF to the Alliance. They did a great snow job throughout the show keeping everyone guessing. The top picks of course were The Rock and Chris Jericho, whose allegiance makes the biggest difference. Kane would have made a difference, but not much. The Undertaker would have been sudden and uncalled for, especially with his feud with Booker T.
I guess it's only appropriate that it be the Olympic hero. Since winning the WWF title belt at "Unforgiven" there seemed little else that could be done with him. His title reign was shortened likely because it was only entertaining to want Angle to have it; once he had it, it was over.
His quasi-rematch at "No Mercy" was a sham. Angle cut few promos expressing his desire to get the belt back and even Rob Van Dam seemed scarcely interested in winning the big one. Only Stone Cold Steve Austin had cut any vignettes expressing his emotions toward the match, so it was all too obvious that he was going to win.
The WCW United States title is an appropriate one for Angle to be holding right now, but it's still a step down considering he's a two-time World champ in the WWF and even held the WCW title for a weekend.
I guess there was just nothing else he could do. Also, the Alliance needed an extra person in the five-on-five survivor series match at "Survivor Series." Before Angle's jump they had Austin, Booker T, Test and Rob Van Dam as their top guys. With Rhyno on vacation (thankfully, I don't seem him as being high-card worthy), the Alliance was short one. Angle makes five for the Alliance, and puts the WWF down one. The Fed. can use that status to build suspense before the pay-per-view.
Now the only question is, who will fill Angle's shoes? I like the idea of RVD jumping to the WWF just before (or maybe during) the PPV. But that puts the Alliance down one again. Edge could always step up, but that would seem meaningless unless Christian took Test's place on the Alliance's side. Latino Heat Eddie Guerrero is threatening to come back to TV soon (actually, I like Guerrero), and he always gets great pops from the crowd – this could be the perfect time for him to take Angle's spot as a top face.
