Five Letters: E C F'N W

When Vince bought the WCW a few months ago the wrestling world changed (weather for better or worse is still unknown). The expected invasion began slowly and was steadily leading towards the invasion PPV that we all knew was coming. Booker T interfering in the tittle match at king of the ring was predictable. The fact that his interference didn’t cause stone cold to lose wasn’t predictable, but in my mind, it was stupid because it made booker look weak (but that’s another story). However, on Monday July 8th the WWF did one of the most unpredictable things I have ever seen in wrestling and one of even less that was a good surprise instead of just a move meant to trick us with something wed never expect cause it made no sense. Monday night ECW returned. Now for those of you who may not know, Extreme Championship Wrestling has been around since the mid 90s. It was run and owned by Paul Heyman and other than just the 10 that defected that Monday, it was the home at one time to much of the current WWF lineup including Tajiri, Spike Dudley, Al Snow, Mick Foley, Benoit, Guererro and even the captain of team WWF Steve Austin. Making ECW part of the invasion is a great move for the WWF. Instantly there was far more interest in the invasion than just the WCW alone could make. ECW gives a reason for wrestlers to jump from WWF. As can be seen by who did leave, it was mainly midcarders with few opportunities in the WWF -- having them leave to rejoin ECW makes an interesting storyline. Also, this boosts the WCW roster by not only giving more wrestlers but also giving a few big names like the Dudley Boyz and Rhyno. Finally it leads to the potential for many other wrestlers to leave WWF because of what they did in ECW. Dean Malenko in his last appearance in ECW back in 1995 said that he would never forget ECW and would always be a fan of ECW. (“ECW: Path of Destruction” DVD). I’m writing this right after having seen tonight’s episode of “Sunday Night Heat” where Al Snow (a former ECW star) questioned Spike Dudley about his possible return to ECW. Spike’s answer was only that he needed to get healed and was loyal to Molly. So does that mean he would never return to ECW? Not necessarily! Hey from the way Snow was reminding Spike all about his glory days maybe Cole will need a new co-host next week.
