Undertaking New Directions (For Benoit or for Worse)

Notice anyone missing lately from WWF action? Why has the Undertaker suddenly disappeared from action? We saw him on Thursday (as eerie as that whole stalker gimmick is) so it’s not like he’s out on injury.

But what’s the real deal with that? One night he is the No. 1 contender for the Championship, then next he’s on America’s Creepiest Home Videos. Since a few weeks after “Wrestlemania” it looked like the next big rivalry was going to be the updated Taker-Austin feud. Then one day he has the night off and – Wham! – Jericho and Benoit are suddenly in the bout for the top belt.

I thought this was going to be Mark Callaway’s, a.k.a. the Undertaker’s final and best year. I thought he was going to grab the gold at “King of the Ring,” hold it for a few months, maybe lose once and gain it back again, and somehow go out with a bang.

But all that looks ify, now.

I don’t know what the hell is going on and Jericho – who totally rocks, don’t get me wrong – is stealing the Undertaker’s thunder. Notto mention Benoit, who was everyone’s favorite ass-clown next to Kurt Angle, is getting two title shots in back-to-back in his place.

What a rip-off!

And I don’t want to hear any crap about Taker being too old to be top-dog. As I've said, he doesn’t really cut it as the lead face but he isn’t that far gone. Besides, a guy as tough as Taker isn’t going to fade quietly into the night. He’s going to go out with one more title reign under his belt (no pun intended).

Especially with Kane the holding the Intercontinental belt! I like Kane and I think Glen Jacobs (the man behind the mask) is a wrestling phenomenom. He is 7'1', around 300 pounds and can fly off the top turnbuckle better than most lightweights. However, I said it before and I’ll say it again: The mask is holding him back. I’ve heard that he’s horribly scarred or burned and I’ve heard that he likes the fact that few people recognize his face in public, but it doesn’t change a damn thing; people can root for a hero they cannot really see. A face must have a face. Batman had the Bruce Wayne avatar and Superman, well, we always saw his face. That’s just how it works. But I digress.
