time and money spent on useless endeavor are time and money not spent on something more devastating.

The willingness of millions of people in the United States and Canada (where a number of the balloons were discovered) to keep an open secret from the enemy is a remarkable story. It is illustrative of the comradeship that hard times can bring about.

Spies in the field, code breakers and makers and disinformation play a huge role in a war, but civilians must not be discounted. Without their willing participation all would be for naught because loose lips certainly do contribute to the sinking of ships and if the walls in the ears are not visible your newspapers are certainly available to enemy eyes.
