Keeping it Fresh!

What does it take to keep a show fresh? What I mean by fresh is simply what is new or different and exciting in your magic show that will keep the audience interested in what you're doing up on stage?

Magicians all around the world, basically have or perform many of the same tricks or stage illusions. With this in mind you might say to yourself, "Well that can't be! I've seen a lot of magicians in my life and none of them did the same trick." That may be true, but realistically you were seeing a variation of the same exact trick, but what made it different was the way the magician presented it.

Let me give you an example:

All of you have seen a levitation of some sort or another and everyone has their own pet opinion on how the magician accomplished this great feat. Truth of the matter is, there are many different ways in which to levitate an object or an assistant. However, if you've seen one you've seen them all, right?

Not true.

Each magician may indeed perform the same Ashrah type effect or may use the Aga method instead or some other method of his choosing. What makes each levitation different though, is the way the magician chooses for you to view it. He may do the levitaion on stage or it may be over the heads of the audience. It may be with a small object such as a playing card or silk or a big object like a Corvette. He may even levitate an audience member and vanish them into thin air without them ever knowing what happened. Whatever way the magician chooses to levitate an object or person, he or she must bring a little of themselves to the act and make it different for the audience so that it gives the "illusion" that they are indeed watching something completely different from anything they've ever seen before.

Another example of this phenomenon are magic shows on television. Have you ever watched a magic show on television and found yourself totally amazed at all the new and exciting illusions and tricks that were presented there? Chances are you have. Chances are you probably taped the show and watched it over and over again trying to figure how the heck he did that. Chances are the method was exactly the same as the show you watched a month ago, but didn't realize it. The reason for this is simply because the illusion was designed differently, the musical accompanyment had changed and the magician performing the illusion brought a little of himself and his own unique style to the piece.
