"You're a Magician?"

Why is it, that when you tell someone that you perform magic for a living they always say, “You’re a magician? Oh, my kids just love magic!” Hmmph. Yes, we all know that kids do indeed love magic. What about the adults though, don’t they love magic too? You don’t have to be David Copperfield or even David Blaine to be the only magicians who do television specials, or big stage shows, or huge corporate affairs. No. You don’t have to be Doug Henning or Lance Burton to be the only magicians who perform for adults. No again. You don’t have to be Seigfried or Roy to only perform with tigers in your act either. No, you don’t have to be any of these people for adults to enjoy watching your show, just as much as the children do. All you have to be is a magician, plain and simple. Adults automatically assume that when you tell them you perform magic as a profession that, if they haven’t seen you on television or haven’t heard about you on the six o’clock news or you’re not in People magazine, that you must be some sort of children’s clown or kids magician who goes around pulling rabbits from his hat and ties neat looking animal balloons. Magician’s and lay people alike, we do indeed perform our fair share of children’s magic shows, birthday parties and family gatherings. Yes..., yes we do these shows very often, but this is not what we are all aspiring to do for the rest of our lives. No. We are striving to become that remarkable stage magician that adults go to see for their entertainment. We want to perform for the adult crowd and listen to their applause and hear the comments about how incredible the show was and that they would recommend the show to any of their friends. Yes..., this is what we are striving for. “You’re a magician? Oh my kids just love magic.” No.

This is not what we want to hear from your mouths when you find out we are magicians. What we want to hear is simply, “You do magic? I love magic. My company is putting on a big end of the year party, would you like to perform for us? I’m sure they would be willing to pay your asking price. How about an hour show.” Yes.

This is indeed what we want to hear.
