Once you go even higher to the ionosphere, you suddenly have to change from protection from severe cold to severe heat and temperatures of over 1,000C! This is the Earth's first barrier from the sun. As you can see, it does its job well by absorbing a good deal of the energy sent from there. If you ever see the aurora borealis, that's where it's coming from. Why does any of this matter? If you have your character going on some fantastic journey and try to say that she flew 10 miles up (in the stratosphere), she'd better have some serious protection from the cold! Not to mention that it would be pretty hard to breathe. Until next time ... So, here you have it. The first leg of the world-building project!
