The Grand Project: An Introduction

What makes these plates interesting for our world building is that their edges denote geographical scenery and more. I'll go more into how this is in the next article. Let's just say for now that where someone lives can literally be shaped by where they are in relation to plate boundaries. So, our first task is to decide how many plates there are, and what their rough shape is. I'll handle the shapes. It's your job to choose the number. I've created a poll in the topic that allows you to help direct the number of plates. This poll will be available from September 22 through September 28, and then will be removed to make way for the next one. Have fun with it!

Look to the Stars

We also have to answer the question, "Where are we?" If the answer is Earth, then the planet is the third around its single yellow star, which we call the sun. Earth is 93 million miles from its sun and has a single moon. While astronomers still debate exactly how many planets are in our solar system, four are visible at various times using the naked eye. Much more detail about the immediate surroundings than this is really not necessary unless you are dealing with space travel in your writing.

However, you still have to look farther. There are stars all around. Once again, much more detail than that may not feel necessary if you're not writing a space-faring venture. Eventually, though, you're going to have people looking up at those stars. What do they see there? We'll have some fun with this later in the project. You might want to keep some notes handy on some of the pictures and portents they might see in the stars. There's also much, much more we can do with what shows up in the night sky. Just look at Stonehenge and the pyramids.

For our project world, we need to decide how many suns and moons there are. I don't want to get too crazy but there is a bit of leeway here. I've included the number of moons with limited values in the second poll, which will be available from September 29 through October 3. I'll give more thought on how far out everything is when we've got those numbers set. This poll will run for only part of the second week so I have time to incorporate your
