My Vacation to Nowhere

could sleep in and relax with a cup of coffee and really read the newspaper. I didn't have dress up, just shorts and a T-shirt. When I felt like a treat, I'd go over to the local coffee shop and buy a huge mocha cappuccino. That lasted me for hours and I just sat back and enjoyed it.

I took it easy with meal preparation. Instead of throwing something together like I usually do, I barbecued and made lots of salads. With the kids coming & going all day, I made sure there was lots of easy-to-prepare meals for them or I would put the leftovers in the fridge for them to reheat.

By being home during the day, I was able to drive my kids to different places. The teenagers had the urge to go to the beach. It's only a 15-minute drive away and the bus service is spotty. I dropped them off in the afternoon and picked them up after supper. In the evening, I brought my youngest son with me and he had a swim. I let the kids know I was there and let them hang out with their friends. I made sure I sat over 100 paces away; who wants a mother hanging around?

It may not have been the dream vacation, but I had a chance to rest up and prepare to face the working world again. The kids don't really care to go away. If I had taken them under protest, the trip would have been miserable.

Mind you, I'd love to do this forever if I were independently wealthy. To me, a day away from work is a vacation in itself!
