My Home Communication Center

I have tried several methods of recording appointments, reminders or special events. So far, I use a calendar on the kitchen wall where I write in appointments. This is very effective for events on a specific day. I also use it for marking my paydays and vacations. My fridge is full of magnets and that's where I post printed material, such as notices from the school, newspaper clippings, and a phone list. It looks messy and the papers go flying everytime I open or shut the door!

Despite the calendar and the fridge, I needed a place to post reminders to my family and for tracking allowance advances or what I have lent to people. I finally found a wonderful solution and it seems to work well--I now own a combination whiteboard/bulletin board.

It took a while to find what I wanted. At the office supply stores, I didn't find the size I liked. They had large ones that are the size of school blackboards. The medium size ones where just too heavy and had to be drilled into the wall or they were on easels. I only had a small wall at home, so size was an issue for me. At most department stores, I found small ones with magnets that you stick on the fridge. Finally, at one store I found exactly what I wanted. This board is lightweight and approx 2 feet wide and 2 feet high. Half of the board is cork for pinning up notes and the other half is a whiteboard. On the package, there was a write-up on the inventor of this product. It was the idea of a college student who needed a whiteboard and bulletin board. It included all the accessories, such as pins, markers, eraser and holders. On the frame you attach the holders for the markers & erasures and keys.

With this new board, I am now able to write in where the kids have gone and the time they are due back. Not only does it give other family members an idea where they are, it is a written agreeement of that evening's curfew. If I need one of the older kids to babysit, I post a "help wanted" message in advance. Once in a while, one of the kids wants an advance on his allowance, I use the board to track it. We try to use it for phone messages, but we have to work on it.
