Daycare At Your Workplace

© Maureen Fleury

While looking for information on daycare facilities at the workplace, I came across an interesting article Running on Empty which outlines the success and failures of various daycares set up in Southern Ontario, Canada. This article gives you an economic perspective and may explain why there are not a lot of these types of daycares in operation.

Let's assume your employer does offer daycare facilities or you are in the process of making a formal proposal to your employer. What would be the factors to influence your decision on enrolling your child or what would you include in your proposal?

  • Do the hours of operation cover your hours of work?
  • Is the price reasonable?
  • Are the surroundings pleasant and safe?
  • How do they keep the children entertained?
  • What are the qualifications of the care-givers?
  • Does your child get to see you? This may be good or bad depending if your child gets upset when you drop them off.
  • Are you breastfeeding? Are you able to nurse during working hours?
  • What happens if you are on a training course or at a conference which is nowhere near your place of work? Would you be able to drop off your child?
  • What happens if you can't drop off the child due to car trouble or day surgery and your spouse has to take your child to daycare? Is this location convenient for him?
  • When your child reaches school age, is this daycare near his/her school? Are you able to enroll your child in a school out of area? You may end up switching to a local daycare at this stage of your child's life.
  • How would you handle the situation if your child has a behavior problem and is asked to leave the daycare, would your employer develop a poorer perception of you?
  • See my previous article How Does Your Daycare Measure Up? for a more in depth analysis of daycare facilities.

I hope these factors will help you with your decision-making or your proposal. As in all processes, it will be successful if it's a win-win situation.
