Making the Most of Your Lunch Breaks

One thing that bothers me is having to run errands after getting home from work. I arrive home around 6:00 and some of the local businesses are already closed so I try to do as much as I can during the day. I do not live near my job so I try to make use of the services near my office. This habit actually started when my kids were very young and I did it to avoid dragging them from place to place. I still do it just to gain more time at home. Here are some examples of what I do.

I use the dry cleaner down the street. I don't feel embarassed carrying my clothes a couple of blocks. At least the plastic bags prevent rain damage. Although I haven't tried it, someone from work has negotiated a deal with another dry cleaner to pick up clothes at our office. We fill out the claim tags and he picks up and delivers.

I'm lucky to have a small Mall a few blocks away. They have a drug store where I can buy health & beauty supplies as well as soft drinks, school supplies and day-old baked goods. There is a department store where I can get household goods, clothing, greeting cards or birthday presents. As long as I can carry the items in my hand, I will buy them during my lunch hour.

My family doctor has a clinic that is open evenings & weekends so I can arrange appointments to meet my "at home" hours. An eye doctor is different. I have one that is close to work but I can't go at lunch time because their office is closed. My employer is flexible so I go to my appointment and then eat lunch at my desk. I realize some people can't do that, so maybe grabbing a quick bite at coffee break may suffice.

I do pick up a few groceries (usually something I need for supper). We have a small fridge at work and I can stow small items that need refrigeration. (Mind you, I have to stick a note on my computer monitor to remember to stop off at the fridge at the end of the day). In the winter I can leave the refrigerated food in my car.

There is a car repair shop across the street so it's handy for an oil change or minor repairs. I can pick my car up by noon or leave it there until the end of the day. I might as well get the car maintenance done while it's sitting there all day doing nothing.
