Travelling by car can be very boring for kids (adults too) but you can try to make the trip more interesting by playing games. I hope some of the games in this article will help make the trip go smoother and maybe quicker. Happy motoring!
Taking A Trip Game
This is a memory game where the first person starts out by saying "I'm taking a trip........" and fills in the rest of the sentence with the name of object (e.g. "and I'm taking my camera with me") or the name of a person ("with my family") or the name of a destination (e.g. "to my grandparents cottage"). Each person repeats what the last person said and then adds on his/her own information.
You can use different types of lead-ins for this game. For instance, start the game with "Once upon a time" or "In my suitcase I packed". Guessing Game
The person who begins this game thinks of something (a person, place or event) and gives a very basic clue. Each person takes a turn guessing, and the leader answers with just a "yes" or "no" until another player guesses correctly. Silly Car Rules
Try making up some still rules for the passengers to follow and to remember to carry out. Some of the rules could be clapping hands when you see a red car, holding your nose when you see a cow, snapping fingers when you see a police car, or say a certain word when you see something. The rules can be endless! Letter Search
Select a word (the longer the better) such as a state or city name, or name of a car or country and then find objects on the road that begin with each letter of that word. Scavenger Hunt
Before you go on your trip, hand the kids a pack of index cards and ask them to write or draw pictures of 50 things they might see on the trip. When the item is found, the card is turned over. Racing Raindrops
Each person traces the course of a raindrop on a window. The first drop to reach the bottom wins. Poetry From Billboards
Take turns picking out 4 words from road signs. The leader gives the words to the other players who have 1 minute (or more) to turn the words into a 4 line poem using one word per line. Prediction
Each person can take a guess at things like "how many minutes or hours until you reach the next town" or "how many red cars we will see in the next 15 minutes."
