You Don't Need to be a Techie to be a Web Host

Ever consider starting a home-based Web hosting business? You might be surprised to learn you don't even need to understand the technical end of hosting very much -- you can resell another company's hosting services and let it handle the details you don't understand.

What's Web hosting? It's the business of providing space for a customer's Web pages, and usually offering some additional features as well: e-mail addresses, scripts for guestbooks and order forms, security for online shopping and the ability to add new Web pages, change existing ones, and so on. These things are provided on a Web server -- a powerful computer with a 24-hour-a-day, direct Internet connection.

You don't need your own Web server to become a hosting provider these days. You can start a hosting business by becoming a reseller ... and there are plenty of hosting companies offering resale packages of all kinds. What you DO need is sales and marketing savvy, business smarts and a commitment to providing good service to your customers.

How does a reseller get started? A good resource to begin with is the ReCellar (http://www.recellar.com), a Web site for hosting resellers. This site will introduce you to the basics of the business, present an overview of the various options available, and even let you meet fellow resellers who can help you learn from their experiences. If you like the idea of an e-business, virtual Web hosting could be for you.
