Do you enjoy writing? If so, you could build your interest into a home business. Writers enjoy plenty of opportunities to work at home, especially thanks to the wealth of information now accessible on the Internet, and the speed at which information can be disseminated.
Here are just a few potential home businesses for the talented writer:
1. Newsletter publisher. Have a hobby or interest you're fanatical about? You could publish a newsletter with facts, tips and resources for others with the same interest as you. You'll need a good computer and desktop publishing program, along with a talent for writing and design.
2. E-zine publisher. Same idea as above, except you're publishing online. Your 'zine can be an ever-changing Website, an e-mail publication you send regularly to subscribers, or a combination of both.
3. Business plan writer. Any serious business needs a business plan to guide it through good times and bad, and to help it grow and adapt. Too many business owners don't take the time to develop a plan, however. If you can persuade them of the importance of a business plan, you can create a solid business for yourself. You should have a good understanding of business development, financing and management to be a business plan writer.
4. Copywriter/public relations expert. Plenty of businesses are thrilled to turn to freelancers for some or all of their copywriting and public relations needs, rather than keep additional people on staff. Businesses need ads for newspapers, radio and television, and they need talented people for both copy and design work. It also is harder today to gain media exposure than in years past, and businesses need quality people who know how to write effective press releases and understand the needs and wants of the media.
5. Writing instructor. Many community colleges, extension services, park districts and other agencies provide continuing education courses for adults, and writing is always a popular subject for classes. Topics you could teach include: basic writing skills, writing for business, basic fiction writing, plot and character, basic non-fiction writing, how to break into a freelance career, and so on. You could also tutor kids in grammar, spelling, vocabulary and basic writing skills.
