Public Relations Can Make a Successful Home-Based Business

Many people have built successful home businesses for themselves as public relations specialists. If you're good with people, have a knack for writing and are well organized, you might want to give this type of business some thought.

Plenty of businesses are thrilled to turn to freelancers for some or all of their copywriting and public relations needs, rather than keep additional people on staff. Businesses need ads for newspapers, radio and television, and they need talented people for both copy and design work.

It also is harder today to gain media exposure than in years past, and businesses need quality people who know how to write effective press releases and understand the needs and wants of the media. Companies also are realizing their websites need effective sales copy -- far too many firms invest a ton of money in design but skimp when it comes to content.

Your responsibilities might include writing press releases; taking photographs; submitting releases and photos to newspapers, magazines, radio stations and television shows; making follow-up telephone calls; arranging media interviews; fielding questions from reporters and producers; and preparing other media-related materials such as brochures, booklets and annual reports.

For more information, contact the Public Relations Society of America (33 Irving Place, New York, NY 10003-2376, (212) 995-2230, (212) 995-0757) or visit the society's Website at http://www.prsa.org.

You might also want to check one of the trade publications for PR people. It's Communication Briefings, published by Encoders Inc. You can learn more by visiting the publication's Website at http://www.combriefings.com.
