Making Ends Meet: How to Generate Income without Expense

On Friday, my husband Roger was let go from a two-week contract with a local computer company only six days after starting work with them. Their reasoning? That one customer complained that he did not go the extra mile with them, and thus was not suitable for the job. The real reason? Roger was eligible for a wage subsidy program from the government because he is just out of school, which would benefit both the employer and himself. However, the main stipulation of the program was that he would not be able to start working for the company until they had clearance from the wage subsidy program's administrator. However, the company was impatient, and wanted him to start work immediately. Roger told them the consequences of having him start immediately, but the computer company in question favored dishonesty, and asked him to lie if approached.

Roger, being the honest man that he is (and with some really weird luck!), answered the phone three days into the contract. It just so happened that the subsidy program's administrator was on the phone, and recognized his voice. Neither one of us thought anything of it, until he was told at 3 p.m. Friday that his services were no longer needed.

To top things off, when he picked up his paycheck this morning, another person had already been hired, unaware of the situation. He too is a recent graduate. And so we connected the dots.

Needless to say, this company will not be receiving any wage subsidy programs from the government now for a very long time, thanks to Roger's complaint. However, we are in quite a bind now. This is the company that we have been in contact with for over three months before our move, and was even willing to pay for our moving costs in order to have Roger working for them sooner. There are no other companies in town who are hiring at the moment in his field (there really are not many to choose from anyway). What to do?

We are now seriously considering starting another business from our home - phone and in-home computer servicing and consultation. (There is no company in town that offers this type of service for consumers.) The only problem is - we have no home! (We are staying with family until things look a little better.) It's been a really rough week - and of course, not as one-dimensional as it seems here on your screen. (Wow - does it ever feel good to have that all off of my mind now, and to just leave it here until I am better equipped to deal with it! Thanks for letting me share it with you all - and bearing with me on this long tirade.)
