Work for Yourself Without Working By Yourself: 19 Direct Sales Companies That Want You

Want to work for yourself without working by yourself? Becoming an independant consultant is a great way to have the best of both worlds, while still earning a fair to excellent percentage of your sales, depending on the individual company. There are many articles that I can refer to, where parents like ourselves have beat the odds and have ended up earning more money that they had at their traditional jobs - sometimes even three times the amount.

Decide what you are willing to invest, if anything, before you start searching. I realize that many of you feel that paying for a "job" is unrealistic, and should not be warranted. Although, in part, I agree, there are always hidden costs to finding work, whether or not they are self-generated.

When looking for work, you have to spend either your time or your money (or both) to locate a job. Think about the money spent on newspapers, gas, printing costs, clothing, and resume creation. It can add up to be quite a bit by the time you find suitable work. When looking for a business/direct sales opportunity, it is essentially the same thing, with one major twist - you interview the company to see if they suit your expectations, and not the other way around. Also, when you sign up, most direct sales companies then ship to you a large amount of product for you to show to your potential customers. There is no way for that company to know whether or not you will pay them back for the product that they have sent to you, and no way of knowing what your sales will be like. Therefore, you must put up some money to get the necessary equipment. Some companies give you a better discount that others, and some give you all of the necessary equipment to get started, along with training, while others do not. These are all things that you need to look into before signing on the bottom line - because the time that you take now to determine your needs will definitely pay off in the end!

The following is a checklist for you to use when deciding which (if any) direct sales company is for you and your family. (Feel free to cut and paste it into your word processing program, to print out and use as you see fit!)

  • Contact your local Better Business Bureau, and find out if there are any on record complaints about the company you are looking at.
