Spotlight On Debbie Williams and "Let's Get It Together"

© Bonny Albo

This week, a change of pace!

We are spending a little time with Debbie Williams - entrepreneurial parent, freelance writer, and time management guru. Her home based business, "Let's Get It Together" helps parents like ourselves to manage our time as well as our lives more effectively. (Definitely a service in demand - I know that I could use some tips and tricks to make my life run a little smoother!)

What follows is the online interview that I held this past week with Debbie, in its entirety.

1) Please give a brief autobiography.

Debbie Williams is a professional organizer and the editor of the Let's Get it Together newsletter. After earning a bachelors in education from Arkansas State University, she specialized in medical marketing and management. Her writings include procedure manuals for medical administrative personnel, corporate identity literature, product inserts, and sales letters for mass mailings. Currently she is a free lance writer for women's publications, focusing on time management and home organization skills

2) Describe your business. Who is your target market?

Let's Get it Together provides organizing tips and time management skills to busy moms and dads, particularly those in the 25-45 age group.

3) How long has "Let's Get It Together" been in the workings? How long has it been up and running?

Let's Get it Together began as a professional organizing newsletter concept in December of 1997, and went online March 1, 1998.

4) What were your start up costs, if any? How did you finance "Let's Get It Together"? (ie: personal, loan, etc.) Start up costs were under $100: I already had a computer, modem, and Internet account. My only investments were desktop publishing software, a DBA license, and the rental of a post office box. Once I received orders for my newsletter, I had a small quantity printed locally. Financing was from my own personal checking account.

5) What sort of marketing have you done? Has it been succesful? Why or why not, in your opinion?

Marketing has been done mainly through networking on the Internet: finding mentors, link exchanges, finding a test market through bulletin boards, writing sales letters, and reading everything I can get my hands on at the library and online. It's been very successful. Parents with businesses online are so helpful and eager to share information with those of us just starting out.

6) How many hours a week do you devote to "Let's Get It Together"?

About twice as many as originally planned! 20-25 hours per week.
