you could probably get away with knowing nothing but the absolute basics when using a WYSIWYG editor (What You See Is What You Get). But if you are anything like me, you'll want the capabilities of personalizing your web page to look exactly the way you want it to. HTML is the way to do it.

Use the resources already available to learn more. The library is an excellent start. (Some books that may be helpful are listed here.) Checking out the source code for the pages that you personally enjoy spending time will also help you to understand the intricacies that you would never pick up from just reading a book. (To view a web page HTML or source code, just go to the "View" header on the top of your page, and then click on the "Source Code" section.) For some HTML code tutorials, check out HTML here at Suite 101.com. And for one of the best all around sites that I have ever come across, check out Web Page Authoring, also here at Suite 101.com. Just the discussions alone are a wonderful resource, but the articles are informative as well as explanatory enough for those of us still learning the ropes.

CGI Scripts & Other Things to Jazz Up Your Page

Personally, I like guestbooks. I like to see where others before me have come from, as well as read the feedback from real people about a particular site. However, if you do not like them, then don't use one! :>

CGI Scripts Matt's CGI Scripts is chock full of useful CGI scripts, as well as other tools for any web page. Be warned however, that much of the information provided here is quite technical.

If you are anything like me, you know nothing about CGI scripts. I was concerned about this when the need for forms on my page arose, until I discovered Free Form. Free Form lets you create any form that you can think of within the blink of an eye. (OK, maybe not that quick...maybe as long as it takes for your four-year-old to put on his/her shoes.) Cut, copy, and paste onto your page. All of the form's information gets sent to you at the e-mail address of your choosing, with little work on your part other than the initial setup.
