Easter and Your Family

Check out Easter at Suite 101!

I remember Easter fondly when I was a child. Our family would get up earlier than usual to have our annual Easter Egg Hunt, searching the house for eggs that we had decorated the night before. We were always short one or two eggs every year, much to my parents chagrin. (But don't worry - the smell would alert us before the week was over where the hidden treasures laid!)

After the hunt, my family would then sit down to a spread of hot cross buns, cold cuts, and, of course, hard boiled eggs. But to eat an egg, we had to crack it first - and it had to be in a duel with another egg.

Sound odd? It was, but always ended up being a whole lot of fun. We would take our chosen egg, hold it with the pointed tip outwards, and proceed to tap our opponents egg on it's pointed tip. Invariably, one would crack, and the other would not. The cracked egg then had to be eaten, while the winner held up their glorious egg in victory for all to see. It was a lot of fun . . . although I cannot imagine what our cholesterol levels must have been.

Now that I have my own child, I wonder what kind of traditions my husband and I will share with her. Although our daughter is too young for most of the festivities (except, of course, the religious ones), I got to thinking about what we will do when she is older. Schools are closed, as are most daycares. Most parents get the day off of work - but what about those of us who work at home? Will it still be "work as usual," or will it be enjoyed as a day to relax with the entire family together?

I guess that that will truly depend on each of our lifestyles. But no matter what the situation, take the time to enjoy it, together with your kids. And do not worry if it is not a huge affair, either. The little things are the ones that I remember most, and not the big productions. The look on my father's face as he bit into an eggshell, my sister cackling at me, "I beat you, I beat you." The cloyingly sweet smell of the hotcross buns, mingled with laughter. I will never forget those wonderous moments, and I cherish them dearly.
