Writing

Freelance writing is one business that, I have found, fits very well into a work-at-home parents lifestyle. You can research, interview, write, edit and submit many articles right over the Internet, any time of the day. If your child is in need of attention, you can stop what you are doing immediately to tend to her/him. You can go with your children to the library to do research, and even include them in the proofreading if they are a little older.

I have a tendency, however, to think out loud, and if I do not write my ideas down on paper I lose them very quickly. Therefore, I would suggest to any parent thinking about going this route is to invest in an unbreakable handheld tape recorder that you can carry around with you everywhere. For some of you, just a pen and paper will suffice, but for those of you (like me) who seem to always have your hands full, this can be a great timesaver.

I should also mention that becoming a writer has some great perks as well if you already run a business. Think about a column that you could write related to your business (i.e., Day Care — "Affordable Childcare Options in the Nineties"; Sales — information about buying your product in the marketplace, such as "Kids and Computers"; Bookeeping — "Tax Time Reminders"). We are a society that devours information to help make purchasing decisions — if you provide it, it will be read!

Some great links to check out:

Writers Resources on the Web is an excellent site full of fantastic links for aspiring freelance writers and seasoned professionals alike. And for those of you who think, "Nah, not a site for me!" — think again. Check out Finding Sources, where you can become a part of the Online Directory of Experts & Spokespersons — in your field of expertise. (Think about it: this is where journalists and writers search for experts to refer to when they write articles — free publicity for you, your home-based business, and your subject!)

Writing Resources and Journalism here at Suite 101 houses a great list of pertinent links. The Freelance Writing FAQ is written by Marcia Yudkin, the author of Six Steps to Free Publicity (which I would highly recommend).
