Where To Look For Work That Fits

© Bonny Albo

You have discussed with your family how your working at home will fit into your lifestyle, and you've narrowed down your list of business ideas to look into further. But now what?

Well, now comes the fun part — looking for work that fits. Work that fits your family, your personal interests, goals, time frame, finances and talents. Work that you enjoy, love and look forward to every day. And work that, most importantly, pays the bills.

There are a huge number of resources available to you to help you decide what fits you perfectly. I have assumed that you have a general idea as to which type of business that you would like to work in. If not, take a look at the links that interest you, and go from there. Here are the best links that I could find in each topic listed:

Accounting/Bookeeping

Accounting and bookeeping are work-at-home dreams come true for those of you who have the inclination. You can, for the most part, work at your own pace, have access to year-round work, and travel to your clients' businesses without them ever having to see your dirty laundry pile up next to your filing cabinet.

Please do check on the zoning in your neighborhood, however. Most communities have clauses in the zoning laws for home-based business, but you need to be aware of the fine print. For instance, my apartment is zoned for residential usage only, but allows for home-based businesses on the premises. However, there are several restrictions:

  • No employees other than family members.
  • No inventory can be on the premises.
  • No cooking for commercial purposes.

There are many others that I have not included here, for brevity's sake. But, as you can see, accounting and bookeeping businesses run from the home fall quite nicely into these restrictions. (Now the insurance company, on the other hand, is a different story all together!)

iVillage Homeruns — This site offers a good starting point for those of you who consider accounting/bookeeping as your forte. Scroll down to the bottom for other pertinent links and even view an interview with a parent who already is working from home as a bookeeper.

Bookeeping Express is what looks like a franchise opportunity to work at home as a bookeeper. I am hesitant to suggest this route, just because of the initial financial outlay, but worth taking a look at if this is a business you are considering.
