The WHF2000 has started something new in the world of haiku and in world haiku. It is hoped that the double Kukai on 31 December and 1 January 2001 will celebrate this new initiative and become a trigger point of that which will follow up what has been started. I hope as many haiku poets as possible will take part in this exciting Kukai. Please let your friends and acquaintances know about this Kukai. We will have fun in addition to Champaigne and "toso".
(1) You are encouraged to compose your haiku poems actually on each of these two days (i.e. not before) and submit as many haiku poems as you wish to the haikuforum list (yes, on-list). Allowing for time differentials, we will be having effectively a simultaneous world-wide kukai, from Tonga to Hawaii; (2) There is no single kigo or keyword for each of the two days. The theme for the New Year's Eve Kukai is the "end of the year". You give your own interpretation to this theme. Similarly, the theme for the New Year's Day is, yes, you guessed it right, the "start of the year"; (3) There are no other rules or restrictions by way of style, length etc. However, please put the heading "New Year's Even Kukai", or "New Year's Day Kukai" to distinguish your entry from other usual posting of haiku poems; (4) There will be token prizes (books) for the best three haiku poems from the haikuforum entries and for the best three haiku poems and the best three photos from the haiku-photo contest (see below) and in order to avoid administrative chaos I will select the haiku poems winners (6 in all) as Editor this time. So, it will be a very subjective choice. The best three photos will be selected by Mitsugu Abe's panel of judges; (5) Quite a few people have kindly agreed to promote this double Kukai in their regions as well as world-wide, including Mitsugu Abe (see below), Paul Conneally and Angelee Deodhar to name but a few. I would be grateful if each member would also spread the word and help make this event fun and success; (6) There will be announcements during these two days. Good luck and kengin, Meanwhile, A Very Merry Christmas and A Happy and Ka-ku (good haiku) New Year!
