Without Words - Body Language, Number 4 - Page 2

I don't know if one can detect a lie with a touch of the nose or a fidget. I know lie detector tests aren't fool-proof. So, Medea will have to continue to wish for a more permanent mark. Perhaps Pinocchio's growing nose could be a good evolutionary step for mankind. Body language isn't precise.

In a strict sense, the following has not much to do with my topic of "Without Words - Body Language". However, it is so delightful and it does have something to do with the Human Body Event, so I will call your attention to it. The Montreal Museum of Decorative Arts is hosting an exhibit called Designed for Delight.

It is organized with four major themes which reveal the "underlying unity of twentieth-century decorative arts." The entire exhibit is wonderful, but especially exquisite and the tie-in to the Human Body Event is Body Language.

I will quote from the introduction to entice you to visit: "There is no image that we know better, no image with which we can identify more readily, than the human body. Throughout history artists have depicted the human form and its component parts in a variety of media for ritual, functional, and decorative purposes. And despite Modernist prohibitions against literal representation, the allure of the body has proved irresistible to many twentieth-century designers.

"As a metaphor, the body figures conspicuously in our daily lives: we sit on chairs with arms and legs, we pour from bottle with necks and lips. It is natural for us to think anthropomorphically. Many twentieth-century designers have played on these metaphors, creating objects both symbolic and whimsical."

Don't miss the whimsy.
