The State of the Topic: A Review of Women's Health and Thyroid Disease

In the US, every January, the President delivers a State of the Union Address. This is a time for him to discuss the past year and to outline his plans for the coming year. He uses this also as a time to remind us of his administration's past successes.

I would like to take this opportunity to review what I consider the past successes of this topic. I have truly enjoyed writing for Suite101 and sharing new information with all of you. Over the past two years, I have posted 75 different articles and listed numerous web sites.

The articles are conceived, nurtured and posted to make their own way in the world much like children. Even though parents are not supposed to choose favorites, I do have a some as do my readers. Listed below are just a few:

  • Is It Really Menopause? As a woman over 40, what first comes to mind when you think of hot flashes, mood swings and decreased sex drive? "The Change", right? Not always.
  • Need a Brain Boost Some people on T4 only replacements may continue to complain of hypothyroid symptoms, such as loss of memory and depression.
  • Back to the Beginnings Experience, they say, is the best teacher. It will at least focus one’s attention as it did for me when I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease.
  • Communicating With Your Healthcare Provider The big problem is that thyroid symptoms mimic other disease processes. In today's managed care system, doctors rarely have the time to sit down and hear the whole story before making a diagnosis.
  • Finding Accurate Information The good news is anyone can post information on the web. The bad news is it doesn't have to accurate or safe.

I have also had the opportunity to get to know other women who are dealing with thyroid disease. It has been my pleasure to introduce some of them to you.

As many of you know, Suite101 management, like other dotcoms, is reevaluating market position and the future of the company. The outcome is still unknown, but we look forward to a community that will continue to reflect the diverse interests of all of its members and allow continued interaction and personal expression.
