It's that time of year again. Time to stop, turn off the television and radio, shut down the computer and reflect on the positives in your life. The past few months have been hard ones for many of the people of this world. As governments and terrorists do battle, individuals and families cope with loss.
We have lost friends and loved ones in the most devastating terrorism attack yet. We have lost our sense of safety. Even something as mundane as daily mail delivery has become suspect. So, what's left? How can I tell you to focus on the positives? Counting your blessings may be your salvation. Dwelling on the negatives increases your stress. In recent articles, we spoke of the effects of stress and how it actually worsens autoimmune disorders. Not only worsens, but in many cases may even be the trigger that causes the process to start. If you already have one autoimmune disorder, you are vulnerable to others. Those of us with thyroid disorders are particularly vulnerable to stress and the mood swings that come from dealing with it. Depression is a symptom of both hypo and hyperthyroidism. Those of us that are hyper have lost whatever coping skills we had to begin with. Hyperthyroidism often brings with it a sense that the rest of the world is wrong, no matter what the issue is. We, hyper-nicks, truly don't see when we are at fault. It's not that we're ignoring reality. It's that our reality doesn't go there. Those that are hypo simply don't have the energy to deal with reality anymore. The struggle to cope is beyond one's ability. Just getting out of bed may be impossible. How can we cope? Sit down in your favorite spot with a cup of tea, a scribing tool and scroll (pencil and paper). Make a list of the blessings in your life. Do you have enough food to eat? Do you have clothes to wear and a warm place to stay? Okay, you're way ahead of about 80 percent of the world population. Now that you've started keep going. Remember how to laugh. Watch an old comedy, Abbott and Costello, for instance. Try Just For Grins. Give your favorite person a hug. Tell them why you love them. Remember to tell your family how special they are. Tell them one thing that they've done right today. Go To Page: 1 2
