Bette Davis Eyes (Follow up)

An interesting study conducted by the Department of Endocrinology of Singapore General Hospital shows a possible marker to determine the risk of developing TED (thyroid eye disease, thyroid ophthalmopathy, or Graves' eye disease).

The study screened 100 consecutive patients newly diagnosed with Graves' disease, all non-smokers. Forty-three patients already had developed TED. The researchers measured antithyroperoxidase antibody (TPOAb) and antithyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) along with thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI).

The results showed a 92.9% rate of TED in subjects with both an elevated TSI and negative TPOAb suggesting that this combination is associated with a markedly increased risk of clinically evident ophthalmopathy. This may explain why everyone with Graves does not develop outward symptoms of TED. Naturally, they recommend further study to determine the validity of their findings.
