For the best possible outcome, it is first necessary to correct the thyroid imbalance. With concurrent TED, antithyroid drugs are the recommended course of treatment. RAI (radioactive iodide) treatment can result in a sudden increase of thyroid antibodies into the system and may potentially increase the severity of TED. For those who cannot tolerate the antithyroid drugs, RAI may be used with corticosteroids to reduce the effect of the antibodies.
Smoking can worsen the symptoms of TED. So, stopping smoking would be the best option. But, this may not be the best time to do that depending on your current stress level. Talk to your doctor about it. Protecting your eyes from cigarette smoke can help. Most importantly, seek a doctor with expertise in the field. You trust your vision to him/her.
