The Thyroid Society commented that “The direct implication of these findings is that women who are known to be hypothyroid prior to pregnancy should have their hormone levels normalized as early as possible, hopefully before conception.” They also noted that this underscores the importance of monitoring TSH levels during pregnancy in order to avoid undertreatment. Both societies emphasized the need for further research.

Bottom line is if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant and are currently being treated for thyroid dysfunction or begin to experience any symptoms of thyroid dysfunction (see the previous article), you should have your TSH levels monitored during pregnancy.
