I chose the radioactive iodine ablation (destruction). The thyroid is the only organ in the body that utilizes iodine making the radioactive versions great for diagnostic or treatment. Once the iodine is swallowed, the thyroid absorbs it and it begins destroying the errant cells. The dose used to treat hyperthyroidism is much smaller than that needed for the even rarer thyroid cancer.
Now, I am experiencing the results of my decision. Like most of the people who make this choice, my thyroid is now shutting down. It is rather like going from supersonic speed to time lapse photography shown in real time and requires some form of thyroid replacement therapy. The endocrinologist has prescribed Synthroid, a synthetic T4. So, I begin the next phase of this new adventure into the inner workings of the human endocrine system.
