Lindsay Davenport in clear contention for the Openplay each other, of course, each of them believing that the only ones who can defeat Venus or Serena are Venus and Serena themselves. And wouldn't we know it but Williams senior always seems to be making really brash and thoughtless comments, and then later eating his words. Williams was quoted as saying he was happy Serena would be playing against Martina Hingis in the quarter finals because Serena would "kick her butt good" (not to mention some other little expletive which I don't care to know much about). Once again, Richard Williams was eating his words. Why don't he just shut up?! I mean, it's great to see him confident in his daughters' abilities but he takes his comments way too far and irritates just about everybody. His statements are merely attention-seeking and lack any originality whatsoever. Anyway, his bold prediction was SO FALSE! Martina took advantage of Serena's unforced errors and lack of variety by taking the match in two easy sets. I have to admit, I myself didn't think Martina would take it that easily as the last time they played at Lipton, Martina was actually down a couple of match points against Serena before overcoming the power play of younger Williams. I mean, yes, according to the rankings, they would both be given the top two seedings at this tournament (Coetzer is ranked 8th in the world, Huber is ranked 19th in the world). But in reality, they would deserve to be seeded in the lower half of the list. Coetzer, after a career year last year, has fallen somewhat. I wished to see Amanda pick up her tennis where she left it last year by winning this tournament. It did seem like the odds were her way - the second seed was a below-par Anke Huber who has undergone foot surgery which has taken her off the tour for so many months. And there was no other player in the Top 10 to contend with. However, she managed to lose to a player ranked in the low 20's in her quarter final match against 7th seed Barbara Schett in three sets - two which were pretty tight, and the final set where Amanda collapsed. Meanwhile, former Top 5 players, Anke Huber
